Ariyalur ‘s land mass was previously under the sea, about 65 to 146 million years ago. Thanks to a rare event called 'marine transgression', huge deposits of limestone sediments can be found throughout the district. After the sea water receded, the area has been left littered with ‘relatively’ easy to find marine fossils all over the place. This natural museum of the cretaceous period is a treasure trove for geologists, paleontologists and science enthusiasts.
